What Makes us Different
Video is everywhere. Absolutely everywhere you look. So what is so different about the films Mill Road make? How do we differentiate ourselves in a world where everyone is making content?
I have a background in working on feature films and trailers – high grossing, Hollywood blockbusters. When I first started my career in the industry at Deluxe UK back in 2008, I would see feature after feature, trailer after trailer (sometimes the same ones repeatedly, just dubbed or subtitled into different languages).
Day in, day out, I was exposed to the minutiae of post-production techniques. I saw and learnt what worked, and I saw and learnt what didn’t work (because let’s be honest, filmmakers don’t always get it right!)
I think of the films and trailers that stayed with me – those whose visual and aural brilliance told a meaningful story. Why will I never forget them? Why does the message within the narrative still have a hold on my heart and mind years after seeing them?
It’s no one thing alone. It’s rooted in creativity – but it’s also a number of cleverly-planned techniques, it’s an understanding of the end goal and the process it takes to get there. It is a craft.
What makes Mill Road’s films different is that they are crafted with this aim in mind – to stay with you, to make people listen, to provoke change and reaction, whether that be in the mind of the viewer or wider behaviour change. In a world of fast-paced content that is often brash, surface-level and lacking real meaning, we use narrative structure, emotion, nuance and deep thought to draw people in and make films that matter.
The moving image can be such a powerful way of affecting people – what makes us different is we know exactly how to make that a certainty.
